I always wish he would have been around a little longer.

I Don’t Remember Grandpa!

I don’t remember Grandpa, or sitting on his knee,
Not one memory comes to mind, that bonded him and me.

All I have are pictures taken very long ago.
But there is not a single one, with him and me in tow.
He was my mother’s father and I’m sure that he was grand.
He died when I was little, so I never knew this man.

I wonder what this man was like, am I like him in any way?
There’s no one I can ask now, there’s no one that can say.

I must have something in me, that came from Mother’s dad,
Do I have his big blue eyes or his frown when I am sad?
Or is it my spring back attitude when life knocks me down.
I know there has to be something, even if he’s not around.

Yes, there has to be one thing that Grandpa left behind,
It’s something in my body or something in my mind.
No, I don’t have a memory of the Grandpa I never knew,
But I know there is one thing and I know that this is true .

I'm going to love my grandchildren and hold them on my knee.
It's what I learned from Grandpa, its what he gave to me.
So when I'm gone they will remember, that Grandma loved them so.
It's something Grandpa taught me, it's something that I know.

The whole I was reading this I was thinking about uncle Gary. It makes me so sad to hear how wonderful he was, and being so young when he was killed I cant make myself remember him. But then I thought of you and how lucky I am to be so close to my grandma and how thankful I am to have you in my life. I will alwaqys be a Ma'Mas girl and even when your gone I will have the memories of you teaching me how to cook and drive. I love you so much and my Ma'Ma ou will always be.

My Grandpa passed away at the age of 106 years, strong as a oak that gave up when my sweet Grandma (he married her when she was fifteen) got hill and left.
Do I remember my first beer (mother went bananas) and many stories by the fire in winter nights, over all, I remember those kind of lumberjack thick arms whic so gentle could scoop us up towards the sky.
Sorry that you don't remember yours...but, being your friend, you can borrow the memories of mine...

I never met either one of my grandfathers. One was long deceased and the other died when I was a teenager. He had left the family or was run off by an aunt or whomever. Both mystery men to me. So cherish your memories. Great poem. Liz

Looking back, trying to remember something you cannot. A wonderful, heartwarming tale well told. I do not know my mother's father, but I could not, he died when my mother and her twin were barely in their teens. I do know I have his thick, dark, wavy hair because everyone keeps telling me how lucky I am, but that is about it. My father's father I did get to know before he died and we had the pleasure of spending many happy hours together even with the language barrier.....

Be always safe,
Karen

It's the same story in my life, Bonnie--a couple distant memories of a very old uninvolved Grandma, and none of the other three. I've not given them the thought that you have, though; just determined to have good relationships with my own grandchildren. And that's the lesson you have shown us from your Grandpa.
I love the way your mind works, and love that you share it all with us on AD. I'm sure you're a fantastic, loving Grandma!

Love from yer Sis Connie
