I Envied Her
I saw him at the cemetery while putting flowers on the grave of my brother.
He looked so old and fragile as he walked by one gravesite then another.
He lost his balance many times and I thought he was going to fall.
So while I watered the flowers, I hardly took my eyes off him at all.
Up, down and in between each tombstone he walked and paced.
He was looking for someone or something, but couldn’t find the place.
Not wanting to interfere I tried to keep busy and look away.
But I could see he was getting upset and tired as he bent his head to pray.
“Hello, you seem to be having trouble finding what you’re looking for.”
“I will be glad to help you; I’m like your neighbor, my brother’s right next door.”
He looked at me intensely, and then gave me the most beautiful smile.
It melted my heart right there; I decided right then, I would stay for awhile.
He said his name was Sam and he couldn’t find the gravesite of his wife, Lynn.
He told me that he visits here everyday and this is where she’s always been.
So I walked up and down the aisle with him to try and find his beloved wife.
They were childhood sweethearts, they were married their whole adult life.
Not once were they ever parted, not even for a day in all those years.
They shared so many trials and joys, many laughs and many tears.
As we walked and chatted we came across a spectacular site.
There before us was a magnificent angel statue, all clothed in white.
There’s Lynn he cried and ran to her as a man in his teens.
He was straight as an arrow, he looked great in his no longer sagging, jeans.
“How handsome this man was even at his age,” I sighed
I stood near by and closed my eyes; I couldn’t bear it as he cried.”
Oh I envied a love like that and imagined how lucky she had to be.
If only a loving man like Sam, came every day and cried over me.
I felt ashamed to envy someone who died & no longer walks this earth.
Until I remembered, they’ll be together eternally to share the joys, laughs and mirth.
