The One Hundred Word Challenge

This was written to a 100 word poetry challenge - it couldn't be 99 or 101 words, exactly 100 even. In addition, it had to be written as a character sketch.

Cold and alone
Fumbling for the warmth
Of forgotten memories.
The latest headline
Serves as his blanket.
Pigeons scamper
As though inflicted with disgust.
Dirty water oozes
Past his parched lips.
Society scuffles past him…
Designer heels clicking
On the cracked concrete.
He holds no malice.
He holds no shame.
This is the home he made
After his life had ended –
Coming home from a war
That murdered his soul.
His family gone…
They’re somewhere
In the map’s folds.
He feels that this
Is his penance.
Vietnam vet silenced…
A human wall
Sitting sprawled on the sidewalk
…lest we forget…

Yup, you're good. Hit the 100 with a four minute free-write and told a story, a stark reality, that many pretend isn't there or they don't wish to see. Good work. Henry
