This poem was inspired by a completely heartbreaking, intentional plane crash that killed a man and his 8 year old daughter in Bedford, IN on March 5, 2007.
“Into the skies” is where children see Heaven
When you ask them where loved ones go.
The moon and sun mystifies them
And the breeze is Love, they know.
They look up there and a smile encroaches
Upon their little faces and their hearts.
They don’t wrap themselves in politics
Nor talk of religion as majority-ruled art.
So, do you know Heaven when you are in the air?
Do planes help transcend our earthly thoughts?
Why create a fear there willingly and sunder
A child’s heart in your own chaos brought?
They went flying – daughter and father –
One hour was spent “Into the skies”
“Mommy, come get me” was the last
That this poor child would ever cry.
Downed deliberately into reality –
The small plane disappeared into a home
Where the little girl knew happy moments
And where the grandmother was alone.
Distraught father….perhaps an accident…
Their small plane landed in grandmother’s den.
The little girl never again awakened.
Perhaps he flew her Home to Him.
Into the skies, her spirit ascends
The breeze his comforting her mother now.
Into the skies, she no longer knows fear.
Leaving us with questions: Why? And How?
Into the skies, her classmates look now
And smile as they know that she’s up there.
Grieving innocence on that small playground
Is too much for any one soul to bare.
Into the skies – The world draws into focus
As the world drifts into another winter night.
“Into the skies” is where children see Heaven
Where everything, they feel, is good and right.
Oh God, this is such a sad and heartbreaking write, as a father and grandfather my mind automatically thinks what if it had been one of my little angels. It is a beautiful sad write and the sweetest thing is the hope that you give that the little girl is now with the angels.
