Madeline Jones' Wonderful Garden, 1977
writin' for writin' sake
enjoy

Poem Artwork

I saw a piece of land that was cryin’
So dirty so bare
Had a piece of a house that was dyin’
Till me and baby sarah jones moved in
That’s what I’m going to name her
Off from the city I work and the noise
And foul air
Off from the rushing people that don’t seem to care
Even though this shack and land needs a lot of work
I’m gonna clean
I’m gonna fix
I’m gonna turn dirt
And make a wonderful garden for me and her
I done hump fo everything I need
I’m gonna hump till I see my dream
And when baby sarah jones come here
She gon hold this place dear
Cause she gone grow-up big
And travel way from here
I’m gonna give her a start that
…. she’ll carry in her heart
Even though this here shack and land needs a lot of work
I’m gonna clean
I’m gonna fix
I’m gonna turn dirt
Cause I’m worth it and baby sarah jones needs to know her worth
………………….from me from her home
I’m gone make our garden green
Full with yams and greens to eat
trees to breath givin our air purity
And flowers so birds and bees can sing all of God’s little beings
Make a path for the springs listening to what sunshine brings
Now theres another shack dats kinda close
But old lady givens don’t hold up much noise
And gone love the roses I picked for her
Even though this shack and land needs lots of work
I’m gonna clean
I’m gonna fix
I’m gonna turn up dirt
I’m gon’ bring life even ifn’ it gonna hurt
If daddy desides to come home well thats all and good
But if he don’t my daddy show’d me how to cut wood
He show’d me how to hunt and catch my food
Momma show’d me how ta cut and clean, sew and weed
Know’d what to do in the event of should
They show’d me how ta get on ma knees and pray
They show’d me and told me bout those days
Me and baby sarah jones gon be ok
(that’s gone be her name)
and even though right now
the lands is cryin’
and the house look like its dyin’
I’m gonna clean
I’m gonna fix
I’m gonna turn dirt
……and do what is needed
to have a wonderful garden, space and place
for me Madeline jones and my baby sarah jones
cause that’s what I’m gonna name her

I love the positive feeling to this poem, its inspiration, and makes me think as a modern woman, there is much a take for granted, when living is as basic as breathing. Good thoughts here..........
ty for this
I enjoyed.......pax A

Mitzi, There's pride in this that not many could grasp. There's a feeling of hearth that only comes with the warmth of home and moist cold dirt in the palm of your hand.
We do what we are taught, and you were taught to till the land make it flourish, and in turn it will satisfy your needs in more ways than one.
Stunning write Mitzi..

This write, which stands alone without the wonderful painting, conjours up early Americana imagery that truly emotes the struggle, detrmination, pride, and spirit of love. Great Write....Enjoyed much.
