Picture from Erykah Badu Live CD
this is a collab with Brotha Ahmad
who has taught me so much in such a short time....Peace
He said a Butterfly
In three stages
Wake late bloomer
curled inside of Lilies petals
you can’t stop the weathers
but you can atone
it is your nature
I sit in the belly of this earth
unsure of my worth
with wings
hesitating
they call me the barer of dreams
born in complete duality
anticipation of stains
and a thirst to be drenched in spiritual rain
He said, Caterpillar
Slowly
….she advance often overlooked
Stepped upon
Crushed looking for a shelter
A haven
Protection from under the gaze of those
She feels unjustly judge
Looked upon as an ugly being
Frightful
Aghast
No one ever stops to notice
That her movements are poetic
Her strides are determined
Her spirit free
Those who claim to recognize beauty
(for all it’s worth)
Look at her and see nothing to love
I think of stormy birth
way back in the woods
I think of misshapen forms
who mean me no-good
I no nothing of giving up
I think of time bending
air and waters
other elements just don’t seem to come to mind
He said, Cocoon
Dangling upside down
Suspended in time
Encased in a shell called seclusion
Imprisoned in her mind
Wrapped in invisible layers
Encompassed by the pain
Shrouded in uncertainty
Drenched by spiritual rain
I think stillness
quietness and peace
like life maturing
there is a moment of
death,
casting off
not conforming to their rules
only laws of ^Her
recognizing spiritual truth
drenched by spiritual rain
ancestors flow red through roots
He said, Butterfly
Reflecting you can see it all so clear
Drama, violence, the whole atmosphere unnurtured
Unnourished, unattended, forecasted,
Forewarned long gone
You revisit the exhibit
Of your torn and broken spirit
You dwell on what was your hell
As your belly swell to the toll of bells
Despite the tears and all your fears
Life wants to be sweetened with a price
Hatred and lies trying to get by
You still survive
Now victory is within your reach……
I think of wings and flying away
dropped off responsibility
tossed away
I think of heaven and the way
it feels to ascend
(drenched in spiritual rain)
my part must be done!!!
sin to not take my place in what may very well
be the end
poetics can’t be denied
truths never a lie
broken spirit strength within
and I think I don’t care if they notice
the spreading of my wings
but life has got to begin
Elegant, ethereal piece of poetry, with a rhythm like heartbeat.
Beautiful imagery and deep thoughts.
I love these lines:
"You revisit the exhibit
Of your torn and broken spirit
You dwell on what was your hell
As your belly swell to the toll of bells "
I was wondering if this was a typo or... a poetic license?
"I no nothing of giving up "
This was a pleasure to read!

What can I say that has not already been said about this wonderful work.
Can't help thinking about a caterpillar seen by a child. A child will find beauty in that often "ugly" creation of God. If we could see through the eyes of a child, we would value each precious life and enjoy it at whatever stage it is in.
God meets us where we are in the beauty of His love, reaching down to the downcast and the unlovely, even as He touched the untouchable leper and made him new.
I enjoyed reading this wonderfully-written work.

May his words continue to heal those who are torn by this society. Thank you for this poem, never planned to see it. . .but for some reason, I'm glad that I was brought to your page.
blessin's Sis, so good to see free verse written so freely,
Mitzi,
You have captured the matamorphorus we feel so deeply before we break free and fly free, on our own to discover our own inner turths. Stunning write!
A beautiful collaboration, Mitzi. Yes, I have been hoping that more women write about butterflies just for Regis. Hehehehe. Inside joke.
Years back, when my life began to rumble like a volcano awakening, my mentor chuckled at me and said, "The butterfly is coming from the cocoon." I'd tell him something disturbing, and he'd just chuckle and repeat that. I wanted to reach through the phone and give him a blackeye as my life grumbled and rumbled more, and finally all hell broke loose. Damned if the man wasn't right. ;-) I don't know this Ahmad, but wonderful work to him too, for what he's taught you and for what's posted here. I smiled all through the poem.
Three to four to born again, a piece written in glory to be woke, evolution presented in perfect form, a voice that helps the understandering, so much you are a teller of life and hope yet to be, a gift your words are, to us all. Fantastic write and lesson.. Walt
Have to agree with LIsa on this one I can picture this one being recited in backdrop of the great graphic you chose to highlight this work with.
Beautiful Mitzi, beutiful.
This Mitzi, screams to be read aloud. Absolutely stunning work. I read it twice, and I'll read it again..
We open a cocoon every time we pen a poem..yours though seems alot brighter than most though.
