Temple of Heaven

by Kalikiano Kalei — Read all 118 poems by Kalikiano Kalei

One of Chairman Mao's most famous observations stated "Women hold up half the sky!" It was, of course, a blandishment for the masses, for although Mao espoused the sentiment, his personal behavior spoke otherwise. Unlike the Chairman, I truly do believe women hold up half the sky, and the most important part of it, as well.

Poem Artwork

TEMPLE OF HEAVEN,

PILLAR OF SKY...

To see you, raven-haired daughter of Han,

In whose form a quarter of the world’s life surges,

Is to tactilely experience the molten earth-core moving,

The view the deepest submarine rifts of the eternal oceans

Sublimely revealed in all their ancient tectonic complexities

Before the labyrinthine gaze of merciless infinite heavens,

To sense the promise of eternally hope-filled human spawn

Of civilization that fate cradles within the ancient temple

Of your exquisitely beautiful ancestral spirits.

Essential aroma of Yin overwhelms my senses

With the jasmine-scented universal mystery

Of your anima, a compilation of most intoxicating

Chemistry that dares to steal the heart of an immortal,

Let alone the vulnerable soul of this temporal voyager.

Is it any wonder then that the merest thought of you

Brings forth all consuming fires of wildly raging lava

To flood this heart, which the most unconscious

Of your smiles may provoke to erupt?

These puerile words of adolescent ardor

Tumble unbidden from the mouth at my peril,

For flowery spoken phrases are an empty substitute

For truths which only the true st heart may know.

Yet I am overcome by the aura of your splendid

Womanliness, bemused beyond stupefaction by the

Essence of your Yin, by the exquisitely graceful female

Creature that you are, as the resonant chordal syncope

Provoked in my own Chi vibrates in sympathetic harmony

With your life force…a rhythm that falls upon the dry Earth

Like wind before the rain.

I share the restless waves of sand you walk upon,

The heated desert air you breathe, the impersonal corridors

Of heartless medical science in which you pass each sentient

Day. I am the landscape, the mechanical panorama man

Of formular healing, capable of mending all human hearts

Save my own! And you? You are the source of this unseasonable

Storm of passionate regard that would self-combust for the

Briefest glimpse into the electric warmth of your own heart,

Smiling through the lovely dark-brown mirrors of your

Soul! Like the thirsty Earth, I seek my consort from the

Elemental pillars that support the infinite skies

and taunt the sighs of heaven itself!
