Breaking Wind With Margaret Mitchell

by Kalikiano Kalei — Read all 118 poems by Kalikiano Kalei

An off-color paean to Margaret Mitchell, the author of 'Gone with the Wind' (whose monumental work I actually greatly enjoyed). Turns out she was an early, prescient proponent of incorporating the proteinaceous qualities of the legume family into a healthy diet. She was also quite a maverick in her own right, dietary matters aside, though this bit of whimsical scatology here probably does her a gravely undeserved injustice.

Breaking Wind with Margaret Mitchell

Maggie Mitchell loved her beans,

She had them each and every day.

No meal replete without legumes,

Her guests were subject to their fumes.

A character flaw, most quickly thought,

But none could approach her with rebuke.

Each doctor stumped with such dismay,

Scores treated her, then went on their way.

Alas, poor Maggie was distraught!

Would nothing work to change her plight?

She morosely continued on her book,

But had harsh words for her poor cook!

Then, one Fall evening, cool and clear,

Her butler Rhett left her employ,

Complaining the stink was awful bad;

This final straw left her so sad!

What shall I do, she sobbed aloud?

While finishing up her manuscript.

My friends can’t stand to be around,

And my GI tract just won’t rebound!

With that, she had some deep insight!

I’ll give up beans and dine on fruits!

This diet worked with nary a toot,

Not even a loud or soft-shelled poot!

The lesson here is oh, so clear!

When writing about the Civil War,

Do not eat beans or stinky food

Or your book will end up not so good!

Soon Maggie’s epic topped the list

Of best sellers monumentally writ!

Her recent misfortune now long gone

Like a foul wind blown away at dawn!

-----------------

Pootscript: I understand that 'Gone With the Wind' was such a spectacular success that Mitchell briefly considered a sequel, in which her beloved butler (Rhett) returned to proclaim his undying love (probably by saying "Frankly, Scarlett, I don't give a damn (if you reek like ancient rancid SPAM"). [Would the title of this book possibly have been 'Gonorrhea With the Wind'?]

This had me laughing out loud. My hound's name is Maggie and she has the same problem but without the beans. You are definitely wacky but I so enjoy creative minds and you have a great one. :)

Your wit and sense of humor are off the charts wacky, crazy, and downright funny! Being situated somewhat downwind from Maggie's tales, I can testify that there are still whiffs of dastardly leguminous scents that pass this way.

You turned her into an antihero, the character of a picaresque novel that allows the reader to take a disrespectful look and feel free to reconsider clichés. I like this freedom.

Loved the movie. Never read the book. But it certainly is nice to know that Rhett was her butler. From first hand anecdotal evidence (mine), I have found that eating beans does not cause any more gas than any other food… In my case, less. I think the idea that beans have got a bad rap is totally false. Just try to prove me wrong.

I have known several ladies with the first name Margaret. They all use the nickname, Peggy. Mitchell might have been different, but I wasn't in the know about her like you. ;-)

Drove by her house just north of downtown Atlanta many times, but never stopped. It would've been nice to see that old typewriter she pounded on.

Another story. On one of my excursions from the Bay Area, I arrived in Reno on a gray day after they had a big windstorm. There was a drive-in theater on the highway I was driving on. The large replaceable letter billboard at the entrance read something like, G ne wi h th Wi d. When I got back to the Bay Area, the San Francisco Chronicle had a picture of that sign.

I have tried watching "Gone With The Wind" several times, but each time I have not finished watching it and then flipped the channel to something else. I shall give this movie another shot some time later.

Interesting poem, Kalikiano!
