There I stood in the cold
On the outside looking in
The frostbite of recent love turned icy
Still eating at my heart
The chill of loneliness still nipping at my heels
You found me there
Shivering
Frightened to be outside but afraid to venture in
You led me gently to your hearth
Wrapped me in the blanket of your love
Warmed me with the fire
In your heart
Thawing my frozen desires
With the blaze of your ardor
Until the flames
Ignited my passions and my fires
burned so hotly that they
Threatened to consume me
You then taught me
With infinite patience
To bank those fires
Against colder days, never again to let the fire go out
Retaining some inner warmth
As a defense against a cold world
You showed me that warmth
Comes from within
That fire
Can be strength of character
As well as desire
And because of you
Because of what you taught me about me
I’ll never again be out in the cold
