panel discussions and focus groups
reveal phenom moms made famous by classic
motivations: fear, a fulsome fuzz of patronizing
politics, each mom secure in her family,
but mall shopping so important: five kids lost in the hot sun
while moms parked baking Lexus wheels
near the Guess shop, factory-splotched jeans
calling to spandex,
moms lock doors,
crack windows, fearing only
terrorist threats to bomb
their food courts, the kids forgotten
in blurs of yellow, pink,
and powder blue fabric as moms shop
till their kids drop,
yet they talk-talk-talk
security from weird perspectives,
distant evil men planting bombs
in malls, Baskin-Robbins exploding
in cherry nougat ecstasy.
Can only relate to this as a cross-Atlantic voyeur, Larry, but I think I get your drift as I see this to a greater or lesser extent here, too - in fact, am I even part of it??!! Just feeding the neurosis, here!! You are the master at painting a complete socio-political canvas with such minimal, living and deftly-crafted brush-strokes. Your sharp perception sears through each and every well-placed line... just wiping traces of a custard-pie off my face!! Love this! TY Kate xx
This is a fantastic write, Larry ,and I agree with some of it, even though not for the same reasons you do;-)...I think we all have gone a bit mad this election...I can't wait until it's over ...not only secutity moms are over-reacting in truth both sides have done their share of exagerating everything! I'll leave it there!
Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
