footsteps in the hallway,
a clank of metal,
the small door opening,
then clicked shut.
wait, wait, the footsteps
sound, a rush of cold air,
he’s gone.
out like a spider you bolt,
keys unlocking the mystery.
one lone letter,
no magazines today.
inside, a bit of life
for you.
a form letter revealed, your sharp nails
clawing the envelope,
your eyes licking the print
for news.
but no friendship in this,
no warming note of love:
just a notice
to be gone,
the rent
overdue, and your
plastic doesn’t work
on old Mr. Conners.
