look out now, roll the window
down, flutter your eyelashes
till they hurt,
grab a tissue and blow.
flinging past eyeballs, rocketing
like magical farmers’ fields,
the rows of alfalfa, chugging like
pistons, your hand cupped
to make mournful noises
out the side vent of the Mercury.
pause in reminiscence, capture
memories from high school, the journey
you took to catch red maple leaves
for scrapbooks moldering now
in garbage trucks,
parked in suburban landfills,
waiting for mulch to thaw.
