thunder groans near prison walls,
the small town still asleep with last night’s
hangover.

exhaust fumes and after road kill
jump in pain.

stale cigarettes still bent
in the grass, leftover from
truckers who stop and rest
near Denver, their memories
blurred by tumbleweeds
and fog, the valleys filling up
with white
until the sunshine melts
vapor, and green grass glistens.
