Boardwalk Bedlam
Days end happily, waves
lapping sand tenderly,
moms dipping babes
in water still warm.
after midnight, motel guests sleep,
the raucous darkness
punctuated by drunken
laughter, voices liqoured loud.
morning brings the swoosh of waves,
surf rising with the sun,
balconies greeting sleepy guests
viewing orange ball’s majesty.
crime tape yellows the boardwalk,
casual joggers sidestep blood-red traces
splashed during two a.m. bar-closings.
two views of the beach, one seductive
with eternal causation, the other murderous
with human retaliation.
