One could write a book about Mothers, I know I could, what about you? |
|
Dora Isabell Lewis was my-
mothers maiden name.
After marrying Dad she became a Jones.
Her nickname was Dopey,
named after Dopey,
one of the Seven Dwarfs in Snowwhite.
My mother Dopey did look sleepy,
I mean sleepy most of the time,
Her brown eyes vibrant and enchanting!
She was employed as a cook, a teacher.
A guide, mentor, waiter, father, mother!
Hairdresser, and barber, by us, her kids.
Mom could cook and make anything,
make even a raw potato taste delicious!
Her hot buttered rolls phenomenal!
Awry's bakery couldn't surpass them!
They were good melted in your mouth,
like butter and tasted um um great!
Lima beans, pinto beans, navy beans,
black eyed peas we consumed daily,
our diet was mostly meatless.
Except when we went over grandma house,
fired chicken, mashed potatoes,
wow, and the gravy.
Biscuit, cakes and pies from scratch!
Dopey guided us, showed us how to care,
for other, love ourselves!
She was our nurse and doctor,
healed our scratch, cuts and bruises!
Mom taught us right from wrong,
she had no problems spanking us.
Thank God she did no jailbirds.
She led by example and greased,
our scalps until our faces shined!
At that time there were five of us.
Mom was patient with all of us,
she listened to each side of the story.
My mother was endowed with wisdom,
understanding and immeasurable love!
African Americans were called many-
names at that time.
coloreds, negroes, blacks, niggers,
even darkies in the fifties!
In 2016 we're still defining ourselves!
We got bused to school in the fifties!
Through all that cluttered stuff,
mom said stop the fuss,
taught us to love beyond hate anyway
I know that is why I am here today!
Dopey guided us, show us how to care,
for others, love ourselves, live,
each day in victory one day at a time!
Mom left her life mothers day,
many year ago, so she could live-
in and through me!
A mothers' business should be about love
What is your business today, mother?
My mother was love, is love, in love,
with love! Happy Mothers' Day! Peace!!!

Thank you for sharing this little bit of love from a life well lived.
Ron
Your poem made ME cry. What a precious Mother. You had five children, there was eight of us in my family. Mama would get outside and play softball with us and badminton. I miss her so much. Its been many years for my Mother too. She got hit by a hit run driver at 39. Too soon, but God had other plans. Thank you for sharing your remarkable story of your dear Mother. We all caught a glimpse of love and wisdom.
Love and Peace,
Linda
