Despite good intentions we drift apart
This insidious withdrawal begins like a cancer
Leaving us with more questions than answers
Benign at first we busy ourselves with children
Who serve our love which is not uncommon

Soccer, volleyball, carpools and our support
We gladly sacrifice for love of sport
Then kids grow older and move away
We say our goodbyes when we want them to stay
Life for two travel a different path
More silence ensues in the aftermath

Strangers now sit across the table
Unable to speak as if disabled
Disinterest disguised as space begins
And leads two in love towards that inevitable end
Of saying goodbye, it’s been fun
Time to move on our work is done
