Midnight occurs once each night
Subject of movies that induce fright
As kids we stared at the clock in disbelief
Our parents exhausted without any relief
The bewitching hour for adolescents on dates
God help us if we found ourselves late
Midnight instills magical thoughts
Of shoulds, coulds, maybes and naughts
Mind your manners, don’t tempt fate
Parents keep score on life’s slate
The dichotomy between young and old
Defined by this moment in stories untold
Now we’re older and wiser for sure
Midnight follows our dreams still pure
Night loses its magic as we grow old
No longer sinister because we’re less bold
Living catches up with us, our toils done
The nights now longer before we face the sun
Confined to a hospital bed
Well aware of what’s been said
Midnight becomes our ally now
Our struggles over, we take our bow
Welcome us home, Lord, as we breathe our last
When midnight becomes a thing of the past

Now I can relate to this having been confined to a hospital bed many times. Yes the midnight hour became a friend. I learned not to be afraid of death anymore.
As children midnight is more or less the bewitching hour. Turning back into the pumpkin so to speak.
I look forward myself to the time when midnight is a thing of the past.
Excellent write Keith.
The songs and art in this book are about our collective emergence after the pandemic and trauma of the last few years - comprised of 5 collections: World as Refuge, Where We Live, In Our Hands, Rhythms of Change and What We See & Sow.
Dear readers, this is my third book of poems, and inside are a special collection of what have turned out to be not only MY personal favorites, but also the favorites of many of YOU. Some of these have never been available in print before...
I look forward myself to the time when midnight is a thing of the past.
