BROTHER © I think of you often Brother, Flesh of my flesh – Born of the same blood That coursed through Black and copper skinned warriors Long asleep in Mozambique’s warm belly. To the east, narrow lowlands bow To your feet as you stand Tall On bands of steel To the west, arid winds Whisper in bright Bantu tongues Your creed. You’ve the might of a million men In your stride. Power, Fluid power Rages like Zambezi’s waters Through your veins. You are man. From the wombs of dusky queens You came. From a suckling you rose To claim your manhood, And the crowns ancient kings did bring. The heavens serve as your raiment, Draping shoulders – Broad as the north’s rich valleys. Your loins, gird with the tawny pelts of big cats, Hold the wealth of many sons. At the foot of Limpopo, In the sweet grass I lay to quench my thirst With your soulful kiss. Tattooed on my soul is the Imprint of your mighty hands. Brother – My king, My sun, Rising to shine your glory Upon this dark earth. I think of you Brother – I think of you.

Hi Lisa, I read your poem, "Brother". Wow it blew me away! Though I am not a "brother" in the black sence, I loved reading it. One can almost see one's self in Africa in these various places. Poetry with the history of an ancient land called into play within the power and seeds of the mighty, modern-day warrior whose girth and solid stance bequeathed to him by ancestors long gone, but live forever as a mighty oak from seeds like acorns dropped where needed to grow . . . "Brother" is a ringing endorsement to the honor and a tribute to the old as we plod toward the new . . .
