Requiem for the other
We’re born alone, but begin this ‘out there’ life
With others
Held close and comforted we grow in love and time brings
Independence
Leads us from one set of others, to one other
Closeness, another comfort
Another heart beating, the sound of another’s breathing
The warm body that is not yours, but is
There
How do we bear that empty space, that quiet?
When the only heartbeat that you hear is yours
And no longer a comfort in the night
The warmth of that other body is gone
And we mourn for the sight of the other
We feel isolated and alone
For the first time there is no other
To touch
To hold
To hear
To love
To taste
To feel
To kiss
To neglect
To listen to
To fight with
To run to
To want
To need
To be
There
We regret we don’t fit anywhere
Half of a pair, despair is there
In place of a heart
Torn apart
