'Bit' more cheerful. Hope u enjoy! {N:~~~~~~~~~~~~~: Perhaps because I added the photo later, Author's Den has this poem posted twice. Means reviews sometimes show up below the first -- i.e., unillustrated -- version. When people go to the trouble of reading and reviewing, I feel that their reviews ought to be seen by as many readers as possible. Therefore, I am 'collating' the reviews for this poem. Here are the two that have appear at the bottom of vsn 1 thus far:

10/23/2006 Felix Perry Very touching write that I know comes from the heart and your muse is no doubt smiling at the success of this one. Fee

10/23/2006 Marcia Duning And then there are things.................Thanks. Pod. I need cheerful

Thanks to all of you !!

Poem Artwork

          Things, and There are Things

. . . . . . . . .. . .not supposed to love things.
Can I help it if the little redbud out my window
has leaves shaped like hearts?  At the moment,
they are gold.  Spring and summer paints
them shamrock and lime.  A tree, is it an object?
Mere vegetable?   Isn’t all  I love.
Running Strong for American Indian Youth
sent me a dream-catcher, how can I not love
that?  The wicker basket my son wove
at Camp Powwow when he was five
that goes in where it is supposed to go out,
how can I not love that?    My daughter painted
a red and yellow daisy and I love you on a rock.
It will sit in a place of honor as long as I live.
The miniature lighthouses, I adore
because they belong to my Ray.  So
many things come together in time.
Too many, there are those who would say.
Can’t be.  These things that I love
bear very real traces of people I love.
Who love me.  Many have been carried
from this vale.  But they left me
with tiny bits of themselves on vases
made in ceramic class that lean
and bear lumps.   Didn’t really leave,
you see.  Sunlight is polishing the leaves
of a tree Ray transplanted eons ago.
The lavender-tinted vase nourishing
a hand-picked bouquet, a friend
wired years ago care-of a hospital.
Its glass glows in a way almost eery.
Almost think it magic.  Almost hear
its heart beat.  Do not tell me
to tag loved ones with prices
guaranteed to sell.  Have a yard sale,
I guarantee Love will stay
in the house, where it belongs.
With me.

Our knick-knacks shape us into the loving people we are. We are attached to these things because we are attached to the people who gave us these things. I just recently gave someone I love a gift and I hope she cherishes it the way you have described the things you hold close in your heart, Pea...I give to you a big hug, keep it with your dye so when you need it again, you can color your day...I love you tubs full, Pea Green...I would say Happy Halloween, but I know you will have a Halloween poem for us in the next five days, so I will wait...

Pea:

You have packed a lot of emotions into this one; and they're all beautiful. It's good to be feeling this way. Your last line few lines says it all in unconditional love.

Fantastic write!

This is a touching and heartfelt poem, Phyllis. A pleasure to read and we enjoy the many wonders you've chosen to share with us. These are things, yes, but they are also loving symbols of a time, a place, a person who meant so very much.
Thank you.

CJ
