To my disabled wife Bridget and all those who suffer with quiet grace.

Poem Artwork

Her love is like a gentle spring rain,
That washes my sadness away,
A hurricane surrounding my heart,
Growing stronger everyday day.

The stress is too much so we think about life,
Before Myotonic Dystrophy,
And the hospital error ripped it all away,
No one said I am sorry, no one shed a tear.

We imagine cotton candy clouds strewn across the sky,
And God's voice speaking in the rain,
Whooshing, roaring, subsiding and racing,
Refreshing the Earth and making us whole again.

Shared arms and legs,
To answer the call,
When I stumble,
We fall!

Suddenly, from her wheelchair unable to move,
She alarmed me in suffering and pain.
Words formed in her mind, but she can call out no more,
Crying silently in her heart.

An angel I behold, now wings all broken,
She stills my heart with her look,
A beautiful soul in a state of distress,
Looking askance to me for help.

Feeling awe, that God would send love,
Like a gift left at my door,
This person of worth to make me the man,
That the world can never make poor.

Walking with dear ones fills her dreams,
While tender love fills her soul,
Imagining we dance to our song again,
With a body and spirit set free.

Though I fail her daily in many ways,
Hope still shines in our hearts,
That our love will bridge the storms of life,
And her clouds will soon depart.

These are heartfelt verses Rock. I can feel that you really do love and care for the gentle lady. She is your guidepost and perhaps your stronghold against life's storm. God Bless both of you.

You and Bridge took those marriage vowels to love and honor to death do us part. I took them seriously in my 2nd marriage to Tom also. But yours shows through still while caring for her and loving her still and professing your love always. Mine has ended with Tom's death but I kept him til death did us part and not ever sorry for that. Vowels need to be cherished for each married couple today still. Many do not remember them at all it seems.

As a mother to a daughter who spends most of her days in a wheelchair, I can relate. So many people told us that we shouldn't adopt a disabled child... But we are so grateful we did!
Then people told us how lucky she was to have us... No...on the contrary...We are so lucky to have her!! What a blessing she is in our lives. Her patience and kind ways have taught us all to look more upon the inside and to be kinder and gentler to all.
Thank you for sharing these beautiful thoughts. What a blessing you both must be to each other. I only hope that someday my daughter will marry someone like you.

A bridge and a brick! You two make a beautiful couple. I love this poem, Rockie. I especially love your angel lines. "An angel I behold, now wings all broken, She stills my heart with her look, A beautiful soul in a state of distress, Looking askance upon me for help." is my favorite part, but the stanza before it is soft-- ever so heart-stilling, and flows very gracefully into the next part.

You're just a romantic at heart-- in spite of all the mad scientist training, brother. :) --Charlie
