Fathers

God formed the heavens and earth
Fashioned with dust He gave us birth.
Entwined among these earthly things
Emerged Adam, a new father of earthly beings.
Spanning the years we surely must find
A variety of fathers that gave us mankind.
Fathers today are likened to those
Except for pace, it's faster, faster trudged
down among work loads.
Reflecting towards a worn-out chair,
molded in form, Father sat there.
"Hey, Pa, lets whack a few. Dont waste
time sittin' Pa---we've got lots to do."
Worn out from work he stands to play,
It's his sons, you see, that gets this part of day.
Exhausted from running and chasing that ball,
Waiting for supper he hears a soft call.
"Pa will you read a story to me?
It's short, Pa, it's short, you'll see."
There stands his baby girl with book in hand,
He just can't refuse this "third" fan."
Another day has passed Father's way,
Full of turmoil, hard work and play.
Father knows what each day is worth
When bowed in prayer he hears these words.
"Thank you, Dear Lord, for everything-
Soft puppies and kittens and songs to sing.
Grandmas and Grandpas, the things they bring.
Mommas that care for us from sun up to sun down
And Fathers that guard us from dusk till dawn."
A loving kiss and those three little words,
"I love you, Pa, best of all."

This poem was written as a Father's Day Tribute in 1972 in honor of my husband Dan.
Here's to all Father's everywhere and to my daddy, J.D., "Windy John" who passed away
in 1995.
