A fantasy poem about Midsummer and Faeries

Poem Artwork

Watch in your garden on Midsummer’s Eve,
The number of faeries ye wouldn’t believe,
Dancing their way ‘cross the lawn and through flowers,
Wiling away the darkest hours,
Tinkle of bells ye will surely hear,
Leave them a gift and ye’ll need not fear.

Leave them a trinket, sparkling and bright,
Leave them a glittery crystal of light,
Then they will not trick ye with mischievous games,
They will not trip ye or zap ye with flames,
And when near their faerie ring, don’t step inside,
Or ye will be trapped in there, nowhere to hide.

Some will swing wildly from webs ’mongst the trees,
Some will be dancing and prancing with ease,
Others will ride in a chariot of flowers,
Pulled by a unicorn, over the bowers,
Watch them, enjoy them, and make a wish,
See them parade in their clothes, so swish.

Oak leaf boots, petal dresses and flowers,
Cloaks of leaves taken fresh from the bowers,
Flowers and daisy chains adorning their heads,
Pinks and purples, yellows and reds,
Sequins of dew drops add glistening hue,
Even making a beautiful sparkling shoe.

At the end of the night, whilst the Moon goes down,
The great Faery Queen will don her crown,
Midst twinkling of stars, scattered from the sky,
By magickal faeries flying on high,
Then to celebrate Solstice, the feast will begin,
As the faeries join hands and dance round in a ring.

Watch with amazement, rubbing your eyes,
Ye won’t have expected this lovely surprise,
On a magickal night, when the Moon was high,
When hundreds of faeries bedecked the sky,
When ye stood closeby to see them play,
If only this magickal night would stay!

But up comes the sun in its golden robe,
Making its way round the Earthly globe,
Bursting with strength on the longest day,
Not letting anything stand in its way.
The faeries are gone now, the day has begun
When ye will revere the God of the Sun.

Come take ye some strawberries, honey and mead,
Drink ye to Lugh as ye feast and feed,
Come roll your flaming wheel down the hill,
Drink to the Mother Earth, then a bowl fill
With bites for the faeries on which to feast
And they will return when the Moon’s in the East.
