Passaggios

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Catching up on some arias lately, I stumbled upon an old friend: the word, “passaggio.” Known as the Italian School word for "passage," it actually is an acoustical phenomenon that occurs from approximately B-flat to F-sharp in the head-voice range. Many describe the passaggio as the entire range of the head-voice. I began to think of what might be the range for one’s “mind-voice”?

Passaggio

Passage from illusion to reality
knows little of the scholarly
more accustomed as it is
to escape or risk attempts
to create day for night
versus embracing patience

What is this journey so few take
this exploration defying commonplace
perhaps it is but curiosity
bushwhacking for truth
being here
rather than there
now

As children
we clamor for that
which is out of reach
for the height to slam dunk
the muscle to hit it out of the park
the fortune to excel
to share a report card
worthy of apple pie
without first eating one's vegetables
TV until sleep arrives
bestowing yet further
smiles of fantasy

Some time later

Come one's first traffic ticket
one's first break up
first firing
first death of a friend

Reality's door begins opening
revealing evanescent light
ever mindful of overexposure
preserving illusion's contrast
as veracity ushers aside

Life's sleight of hand
knows Time never waits

Following this first glimpse
just as light can never be understood
without the experience of dark
reality assists you
across the threshold
past your fortified resistance
through aging screen doors of delusion

Illumination bursts forth
like sustained lightning
invading a space askew
cluttered by matter
desperate for grounding

Mind's synaptic storm making connection

At last

The next plateau
that pause
that chance to learn
pure imagination sets free
once imprisoned rewards

Our mind-voice magnifies
heart's ventricles expand
revealing horizons unknown
your future range
your personal F sharp

passaggios

Would that be F# major, or F# minor poet? As uniquely juxtaposed as Johannes Brahms and Dmitri Shostakovitch. As I feel it, especially in your last two constructs, you have gone through another doorway of consciousness. Perhaps the excitement of finally, after so many years, finishing your beloved novel. Your imagery gives one a feeling of elation ... "Reality's door begins opening" ... "Illumination bursts forth" and also a shadowy feeling of uncertainty ... "ever mindful of overexposure"... "cluttered by matter desperate for grounding". I see, in this construct, an image of a man having attained another personal mountaintop, but upon arriving he realizes that there are still peaks in the distance even more challenging. Real good soul-searching insight here. Touched me. Continued inspiration...

This is an intriguing entrance, and quite an entrance, indeed, into the essences of mindscape too many people evade within those alternate realities illusions curtains sweep aside to reveal on the stages of our experiences. I was swept along in this passaggio, and find myself musing on the depth and height, the length, the breadth, the volume of my own range, and then again on one of my dear favourite songwriter Roger Water's take on it, in his musingly ironic song "The Bravery of Being Out of Range"... it is too easy in our armchairs to ramble through our scales of being, our harmonics of imagined harmony, to forge alliances and undercurrents of partisanship, void of an altruism or an egalitarianism that eschews all such solipsisms, too easy to abnegate all responsibility that does not coalesce in ephiphanies of self-discovery and a sense of self that fails to sublimate then incorporate the gestalt that subsumes self in the greater spirit of unity that helps us realize our true range augments the bravery of being out of range beyond the original scope of the concept that underlies the word itself... then again, I may have calibrated my response too far within the range of your originally conceived repertoire. But I doubt it very much.

Another terribly evocative poem here, Odin. Keep em coming!

Such a beautiful passage you have traversed in this work. While I love to sing and make halfhearted attempts at writing lyrics, I've never ventured forth and really learned or studied music. So that part of my life is somewhat stunted. Still, it is through writers like you that I can enjoy a bit of the impresario.
