Nocturnal Pawn

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

To awake from certain kinds of disturbing dreams arrests how the pawn of a chessboard or a pawn at a Sell and Loan shop fit the inevitable "pauses" that intercept time and make us consider options.

Nocturnal Pawn
by Odin Roark

Storefront of tattered cloth
flaps with brine laden dust
circling shadows bid welcome
as candles alight clouds
evoking loathsome tears

lives extend on feasts of
doors once open
now but lingering entrails of smoke
dancing the dirge of funeral chatter

packaged sentinels of guideposts missed
parade before rushing gutter lanes
awash with midnight’s seduction
dissonance whispers one’s opera of chaos

sleep behind vaulted cages
holds fast the numbered combination
while memories claw at tags
and muted screams chorus the Frieze of Life

a toss
a turn
mere commas for dreams of soured aftertaste
searching yet another grainy claim check
pillowed deep beneath
nocturnal pawn

"Dreams of soured aftertaste"

Quite a powerful piece.

how much the day can be disturbed by the night;
is our real nature in our dreams more than in waking?
you paint here, Odin, in vivid detailed image
and it is good, it is very good indeed

Aren't we all just pawns in this life? I immediately thought of the old film, “The Pawnbroker.” All the old man would not and could not deal with the changing times. Perhaps your dream hearkened back to that riveting story.

... and at the midnight hour when what connotates a sacrificial pawn foreshadows the dawn of an inspiration, we dream of a pillow talk in an unknown tongue... "a toss / a turn" to gamble and efface the truth of our tarnished intentions has awakened us from our "sleep behind vaulted cages" and other less-than-pastoral fugues of the mind. As usual, a resonant and richly resplendant reverie, redolent with irridescent ideas and ideologies. Quite thoroughly enjoyed this!
