Dogging the Walk

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

A little of Rachel Portman’s “Benny and Joon” goes a long way in waking up this often jaundiced and wacky mind. Indulge me in a little spoonerism.

Dogging the Walk
by Odin Roark

Yes
Like so many things
Humans got that wrong too
Check it out

To walk a dog
Suggests
A tether with a human first
Dog second
Like walking a kid
Or grandma
Or pouting mate

All have tethers (gender be damned)
A connection putting the walker
Up front
Leading the walked behind
Occasionally loping to the side
Depending on sobriety or age

Now as to dogs
The walker’s tether extends
Forward
Pulling
Jerking
At times
Jettisoning not the walked
But the walker

So next time
Get it right
Say it accurate
Walking the dog
Wrong
Dogging the walk
Right

Earth to Mars
This is the Tolbert Report
Signing off for today
More of earth’s backward living tomorrow…

Assuming they survive

Next, you'll be, “Wagging the dog.” But then, that's already been done.

Your phraseology immediately popped into my mind various walks I have taken when I could still walk. I especially recall my wife. Whenever we were in a crowded place like San Antonio's Riverwalk, she would get engrossed in the activity all around and continue walking on ahead of me as I struggled to keep up with my lame left leg and foot. Eventually, she would get so far ahead that I would have to call out to her or lose her. She seemed to hate having to come back to me. One of the things that led to our divorce.

Jazz, my little Pomeranian, was always on an invisible leash whenever we went out. He would run off into the distance, but always look back to make sure he could still see me and often would just run alongside the wheelchair, never venturing more than 10 feet away. If a big dog came, he could easily leap into my lap for protection.

Dogging The Walk - I like it! And I just posted an ode to an incredible dog that never needed a tether or leash - she would walk us right to another abandoned dog in need - often buried under a pile of rubble or locked inside an abandoned home.
