Poem Artwork
Used to be
by Odin Roark

Use to be
He poured his own coffee
Clung a lot to the past

Used to be
He scored below average in school
But that was only grades

Used to be
He couldn’t afford to fill his tank
But that was just a car

Used to be
Low bank balance always cost him a fee
But that was only money

Used to be
His woman left his cup half empty
But that was about growing up

Used to be
His flesh ruled it all
But that was ‘cause his mind was asleep

Use to be
He poured his own coffee
But discovery tends to him now
“Your cup’s only half full”

“Yeah I know
Ain’t it beautiful”

One must have an awareness of the past to shape future. This may be one of the downsides of always living in the moment, tricky business. I love the intimacy and simplicity of this piece, like charms on a bracelet. M.True

Another poet on another day penned a similar sentiment:
"It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul."
That is surely one of life's biggest lessons. And you did it with half a cup of coffee!

Hah! Talk about someone who deals with reality in a very simple way. Sometimes that might be the correct way of seeing things, but in the end you sit alone and wonder what the hell happened to you to put you where you are. I relate. I relate, I tell you.
