Borrowed Time

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

The Hypnopompic state of sleep (that period of semi consciousness preceding
waking) can sometimes be the most alive parts of the day, especially for the aged who might be searching for new life from past life. ( Image by New York Architecture)

Poem Artwork
Borrowed Time
by Odin Roark

Pre-sunrise Central Park,
rain and wind,
chorus of zoo residents,
a cacophony of memory’s pastels
swirl about,
beginning to awaken
the jungle’s beauty,
rousing distant mountains of glass and steel,
their windowed lanterns alight.

Yawns of refuse trucks awakening,
parroted screeches of early morning “Taxi!”
storm drenched newspaper blankets,
remaining stuck to benches
holding fast someone’s homeless night,
all but gone, until the next sundown.

Such are the reality previews of the day’s coming attractions
the lucid dreams of experience relived.

Wanting just a little more time.
Just a moment more to be there once more?

Never lived there, and it's been 30 years since I visited NYC. The streets of Manhattan in the early morning hours smelled like garbage almost everywhere. Could not imagine ever falling asleep there out of doors. Reminiscent in an odd way with many of the cities and villages all over the Far East. Stench memories linger.

I can feel that early city waking up. I see the street people gather their belongings and shake off the cold of the rainy evening. You brought this all to life! Great write!

Love ya!

The city life will go on, with or without us. Some interesting images here juxtaposed amid the wakefulness. John
