With only a few months left before midterms, certain reforms, like immigration, are so fundamental to the democratic philosophy that to stonewall the necessary changes (of which both sides of the aisle should be able to work out, save party bullheadedness) that dragging one’s feet seems unforgivable, and most definitely, unpatriotic, given our country’s ancestry.

White-House-Cage Philosophy
Are we preparing 21st century ghost towns?
Hotel Nugget,
Now but a cat and mouse residency,
Ghost town memories catching still-night breezes,
As hypnotic rocking begins its ritual,
While bramble bush audience tranquil in the streets
Makes room for snake and scorpion of little bother.
An owl atop the saloon’s tin roof blinks.
And like a surreal opera chorus,
Stairways creak,
Brothel’s shredded curtains flap,
Left-behind jail-keys jingle timidly,
Windmill squeaks its hunger for oil,
All becoming a melodious accompaniment,
Knowing well the faithful and sometimes cranky hotel proprietor,
Sadie Dershowitz,
Nugget’s self-appointed diva,
Its one of a kind anomaly,
Especially in 1853 Goldy Town,
Will rock on what once was.
Need a room?
Need a girl?
Need a boy?
Need some shoeing?
C’mon…
Somebody must need me,
Laments the lonely immigrant
Staking a claim to his or her own destiny,
Chanting tributes to his or her settler friends
That secret sadness for the freedom dreamers of yore.
The German,
Irish,
Chinese,
Italians,
Needing little of a gold town’s riches,
Wanting only the liberty to be,
So goes the contemporary ethnic and cultural foreigners.
So little tolerance.
Then.
And now.
Sadie died in her rocker,
A casualty of her time.
But unlike today…
Her dying day
Remained proud.
She’d been given a chance
Like other stalwart travelers
Willing to pave their way.
Sadly…
Today,
Aliens on foot seeking asylum,
Willing by any means
To earn their stay,
Face rocky roads across America,
Seemingly in perpetual political wash-out,
With many having their children taken,
Both parent and child reduced to
White House Cage Philosophy.

According to research by Michipo Kaku, as cities grow larger, population growth in them declines because people in the country have more children than those in cities. And the tendency, worldwide, is for young, childbearing people to flee the countryside for the cities in order to make a living. Perhaps our cities can absorb all of the immigrants coming without increasing our population and the troubles resulting from. But long ago, Paul and Anne Ehrlich, warned of the problem with their book, The Golden Door, not heeded by our lawmakers as your poem points out.
