Some think that love is reserved for the young. Others believe love transcends youth. Still others believe there is no end to love. (Image by Joey Kennedy)

To Be Love

Each morning,
through windows high up,
Manhattan’s light beckons heavy eyelids of sleep,
opening one, then two eyes to embrace another day,
even as foreshadowing reminds one, as always
of inevitable late-night insomnia.

Still…

The daylight hours beckon,
where the residue of faded yesterdays
surrounds today like a Greek chorus of tragedian echoes
careening off walls of cavernous avenues.

On the street…

Desire’s flirtatious bounce,
now languid with age,
remains alert for notice,
defies rejection,
lifts its weathered optimism skyward,
inhaling hope’s aura once again.

At times…

Longing winds its way gracefully through
emotion’s Central Park,
forever freshening seasonal colors
basking overhead,
sheltering these first-kiss spawning grounds,
where bench upon bench,
remains infatuation’s favorite meeting place,
rousing memories once again,
turning over the tattered folds of intimacy’s once smooth velvet,
now but threadbare cover for loneliness.

Still…

On a good summer day’s end,
beneficence spreads its long shadows
offering its nightly solace to the innocent,
its bravery of romance to keep alive
its ghost-like allure.

In the near distance,
rhythmic subway rumbles and cab horns
layered by a neighbor’s domestic rife,
harmonize with nature’s thunder-cloud drums
pounding the sky into the gray of sympathy.

As firmament’s kettledrum rolls closer,
the many small windowed enclosures containing leftover youth
continue the faith that tomorrow can be another beginning,
that the winds of love never fully dry the tears of disappointment,
for such weeping is always needed
to nurture the seedlings of hope,
and the patience to endure tomorrow’s privilege
of pursuing life’s most precious gift,

Nature’s breath of another day,
another sunset,
another chance to be love.

And that, as you took us through, is love!

Love ya! (And THERE is love! Oh, my!)

Certainly there as many types and kinds of love as there are (the imp on my left shoulder is tempted to say 'discarded prophylactics in Manhatten's Central Park', but I'll responsibly restrain myself here) tropical beaches throughout the vast Pacific. The love you reference is one of the most buoyant and enervating among them all, certainly. This a masterfully evocative and professionally phrased paean to that kind of love that you have shared with us here. It indirectly shunts my (easily distracted) mind off on a special tangent along those lines, but taking place on Wien's grand Ringstrasse. I was in my 40s...it was drizzling in that typically characteristic Viennese manner..we were walking along a largely deserted Ringstrasse under the streetlamps, not far from the University...with both of us somehow squeezed ourselves under the shelter of an oversized bumbershoot, after having taken in a grand Richard Strauss opera. We were damp, very much chemically absorbed in each other's spiritual matrix that was only slightly enabled by some excellent (and hard to get) Swiss Dole that you seldom find outside the Valais. Oh yes, there was definitely magic in the charged surrounds and the afterglow of splendid Wien remained with us for the duration of that entire night. Change the venue, insert us in your 'To be love...' and you have the entire romantic history of the human race. Splendid work, Odin, for setting this mood so perfectly... Vielen Dank! K2

As I read your poem, Odin, I found myself trying to put together my feelings I had when I lived in that city. Finally I came to this . . .
"turning over the tattered folds of intimacy’s once smooth velvet,"
now but threadbare cover for loneliness."

Yup. that was me in the exciting city of New york. I lived in Manhattan. Working out of the daily labor places, eating pizza by the slice on Forty-Second Street, I think that was the name of it, and sleeping in the all-night Cinemas. How I made it all those months to this day I still don't know. Then when desperation weighed me down I met Nanette Schiva . . .
