Aging Behavior

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Some would argue it is sad that mirrors reflect only an image’s surface. Id loves to deal with the unconnected, primitive and instinctual aspects of the mind, while the Ego takes on the realistic part, mediating between the leanings of the Id and Super-ego, that part of behavior that conducts itself as the moral conscience. Such is the often-beleaguered nature of behavior. (Image by Erik Johansson)

Poem Artwork

Aging Behavior

A zealous Id catches itself
standing before its fissured mirror on birth’s yearly day,
an octogenarian’s reunion with the past,
looking at yet another ebb

as Aging’s drift bides its time for the moment.

Seeing beyond the obvious,
Superego turns away from another year of patchy memories,
all while its waning awareness struggles with momentary pleasures

succumbing to the rapidly encroaching fog of senility.

How persistent the drifting.

Tenacity gazes at Ego’s cast-away fragments

strewn upon a self-imposed island,
where the flotsam of yesterday’s history,
remains as Mistakes' endless storms,

now but a shore strewn conundrum.

In its momentary repose,
try as the Ego might to connect the fragments

and perhaps project a new sparkle here,
a buried treasure there,
all that remains is the buried truth,

that Superego essence that needs not façade’s image,

but asks only that its inner honesty exercise courage.

Yet…

With Reflection’s limits,
and Id’s stubborn pride,

this day will likely persevere
until Behavior’s next birthday.

Let it never be said that I have conducted myself with any kind of moral conscience......lol!! Let people always wonder what I'm up to as long as I am able to breathe! Look back? Yes, too often to mention but I love to wave bye bye and go on and have gone on. Odin. I love "getting into" this one!

Love ya!

It's been a long time since I've explored the characteristics of superego, ego and id. Would have to go back and read Freud and others. But I gather, that when someone reaches their 80s, the mirror reflects more than the image of an aging self, but remembrance and remembrance lost, leading to a fractured thought process, not as sharp, vigorous and sure of itself as it once was.
