Noctural Backward Walking

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

A prosetry remembrance reminds me that Manhattan living in the last century was special. Makes one wonder. At what point do memory fragments become critical, as opposed to accepting cells are not designed to last forever, even with the sleep’s rejuvenation cycle? Slumber is good. Dreams are better. Awakening with memory is best. Critical staying happy. (Image by pinterest)

Nocturnal Backward Walking

Not easy to bump into anyone from the old days.

Summer heat in the city.

Makin’ me crazy.

I step into stores.

Things have really changed.

Old brownstones.

Some gone.

Some strictly for the rich now.

Old office buildings razed.

Steel and glass heaven-kissers in their place.

You know?

Nothin’s familiar.

I know there was a park over there.

Trees… so big, those trees.

Birds are hidin’ somewhere, I guess.

Where’s the bus used to stop on this corner?

Can’t find the greengrocers.

Barbershop’s gone.

Where’d it go?

Used to be a school in that building right over there.

Looks like it too was abandoned.

I remember Miss Wilson grading papers past the sunset.

That’s what she was known for, you know.

Maybe I’m wrong

Is this the street?

Damn!

All I can do is prowl.

Gotta be here somewhere, right?

Stay with it.

Someone is bound to come along from the past

Show you the way

Guide you to a place to sleep

Damn it! No return ticket on the train

Where did you/me/I come from earlier this night?

No…

Don’t go.

Brilliant, this stroll back into the past only to realize that the past is now the present, the past forever tucked away as a remembrance that doesn't hold up to present-day reality. The images you evoke well serve your theme. So well done this one, so casual in its depth.

What a poignantly-haunting piece, Odin. It chimes with a feeling of innocence and appreciation. “…accepting cells are not designed to last forever,” lays out a kind of loss that’s logic. But logic isn’t a character in ‘Nocturnal Backward Walking.’ Progression drives the wagonload of change right past a person’s treasured happenings, like these you tell of in a way that reveals just how endearing experiences can be when they happen again in the rewind. Not just a teacher grading papers past the sunset, but ‘Miss Wilson’ doing that. So personal, all of it. This was a hand-in-hand journey to read, and the last part rich with love of place of person, and the magnificent pull of familiarity. ~~ djl

Dreams of the past can be like that, ending up with lots of dead hands when you thought you were arriving. I found as I aged, that actually going back to places of the without any maps or guides came up short. When earlier I can go right to those spots without even thinking.

In that way your prosetry proves true in real life like it does in dreams.

My dream, totally new, ended when I awoke this morning just when it was getting interesting… Damn!

Some memories are unforgettable, remaining ever vivid. Each one (it seems) holds some essential truth about the world. There are some inside me that beat like a second heart. And there are some, too, that I wish I could delete. IMO.... you write these kinds of vignettes very well, Odinsan. They exhibit a kind of natural inspiration that is easy for the reader to see in mind's eye. Enjoyed. Peace.... r
