Poem Artwork

Pondering Sanity

Sanity ponders its domicile
Of naked ceiling
As moths cluster about hanging 40 watt,
Resident spider shows off trapeze artistry,
All gazing at something,
Gazing back at them.

Cocooned in a matchbox city existence,
Friendships often imagined
Find safety’s sublime darkness Hand In Hand

Defends well insomniac fantasy.

Such is the comfort of insectile connection,
Knowing outside such apartment walls,
The praying mantis of patience
Awaits dawn’s other kind of reasoning.

Still…

Anticipating tomorrow’s sunrise,
Sanity brushes its teeth,
Dresses its nakedness
And prepares to merge
With have-and-have-not survival.

Illuminating humanity’s chaos,
Sunlight follows sidewalk-pretense
Through high-rise lobbies
Onto skyline office floors
Where ambition’s petri dish
Continues to mutate via misuse

As sand beneath one’s feet

Offers little stability
While pondering sanity ignoring

Our once simpler way of finding happiness.

I guess that's why the screenwriters and actors are now striking. Their sanity is challenged by not only those who give them a paycheck, but the idea that they may be simply left on their own in the constant change causing many working people to lose their jobs, no longer considered useful when faster, better ways of using technology obsolete them.

It was simpler in your time. Finding an agent, getting that first job with a foothold in the door, finding that the cubicle was too small, as you moved out and up. Not looking back until now. I'm glad you have kept up with the way things are compared with the way they were during simpler, but still, trying times.

Some good lines and images in this: "The praying mantis of patience - sanity brushes its teeth - ambition’s petri dish"... I don't think normal or sound powers of mind are things you find; you either have them or you don't. Some might construe sanity as conformity to what is socially accepted. Who knows. I'm sure everyone would have a different take on it. Personally, I think it has a lot more to do with the ability to love and respect others and have them love and respect you back. Being loved and respected helps keep a mind healthy. Still, there is that thin line [between sanity and insanity] that a truly creative soul must stay balanced on at times to create. Enjoyed this. A lot coming out of you lately. It's impressive. Peace. r

Especially love the opening stanza, such artful, creative imagery, following by the final stanza, illuminating humanity's chaos with its rays of hope.
