Colorful falling Autumn leaves fall to earth, where they lie quietly sleeping until awakened to dance again.

AUTUMN LEAVES Twisting and turning, earthward bound Whistling and churning, spinning round A gentle breeze to whisk them on And then, again, they’re earthward drawn. Oaken brown and chestnut red Scarlet and garnet, maples bled Curled and dried and laid aground Beauty, peace and sleep abound. Sullen still and quiet creeps Where this earthly beauty sleeps From out the hills, a breeze’s call And sleepers quickly rouse and fall In dance and merriment. — Ann Gray (written in 1943 at age 16) Published in The National Library of Poetry, 1998
