On the Wings of Freedom

As the evening sun disappears from the sky,
and the world pauses to catch it's breath-
When the first stars appear on the horizons above-
It's you that fills my dreams, and my heart with love-
You can find tears on my pillow,
and stains upon my soul-
From the moment we met so long ago-
I knew without you, I could never remain whole

So I fall apart in silence,
when in the eyes of our young I stare-
and find myself reaching for you,
through memories raw and bare-

When I lay them down to sleep each night,
I pray they'll understand-
that Daddy loves them from where he is-
for he's a Soldier with an Angel's hand

From weapons of battle to wings of freedom,
I felt your spirit soar-
It was love of Country, God and Family,
that led you to that distant shore

When I hear others say you've fallen,
on the battlefield of war and life-
And it's sad you died in agony,
leaving two children and a wife-
I just can't help but tell them,
that fallen you've never done-
And there is no pain and agony,
in the arms of the Heavenly Son-
When they ask why I'm not angry,
I point at our young and say-
You went before us in battle,
but we'll meet again, some day
I have no time for bitterness,
your life meant more to me-
And when in the eyes of our young I stare,
it's our love, I always see

Lisa, the whole poem is exceptional as always, but the last stanza took my breath away! It just soars above all other poems of this genre! Kudo's!

Moving tribute to our comrades in arms. Your ability to draw upon heroism of those left at home is eloquent, yet simple in its message that there is no greater love than to lay down one's life for another; this comes in many shapes and forms from mind, body, and spirit.

He went to war FOR his children and for her. Who would want for their children and loved ones to live without liberty and freedom? I suppose that there are many who want freedom but don't want to be the one to pay the price. They oppose all that has to happen to keep and create freedom but they are the first to complain when they feel that their personal freedoms have been encroached upon. I am proud and grateful, every day, of/for those who have the courage and pride to love freedom enough to put themselves in harms way to defend it. This poem cuts right to the heart, Lisa. It shows the sacrifice that often is made and the truth about how love and pride linger long after our Heroes have made the ultimate sacrifice. You are so accomplished at these writes, Lisa. I am honored to read one this morning. This is just excellent!
Take care,
Sherry

This is so deep, powerful and timely.
Initially I thought this was about divorce, but as I read down and realzied it was about a soldier, my first reaction was to stop....my son is a marine, and he has already been in Afganisthan....and in Sept is going to Iraq.....but something made me keep on reading (even tho I avoid war poetry).....and I am glad I did....you wrote this with compassion, wisdom, and grace.....beautiful....touched my heart
