Dry Is My Pallet

While the words never stop; And
the visions are always cropped-
Through my swollen red eyes-
I see life through a side-view mirror-
Doubted; Distorted; Yet I know
they are there-
One day I'll know; When the final
tear falls; That all my pain; All
my labors; All that I am;
Will fill not much more than a tiny
well used thimble-

I am nothing more than the creation of mankind-
Traveling alone through time-
Tapping on the window of another's dream-
Walking away unfulfilled; Head down and sad-
My words; These words will never embrace matter-
Not on your heart; Nor mine-
They'll slide from your soul; Like water on oil-
and lay as forgotten as I-

I beg only for the crumbs; The broken pieces
of the day-
Yet even they seem frivilous and undeserved-
Dry is my pallet; To the sense of sweetness-
Numb is my mind to the fruits of my wanting-
I won't starve; Not in death; To death;
or for it's promise of total silence-
For I feed heartily from warm mouths of kind spirits-

I question not their fairness; In tone nor feature;
for they are my horizons to be-
One day I'll know; When the final tear falls;
That all my pain; All my labors;
All that I am or have ever been;
Will fill not much more than a tiny well
used thimble-
And my words; These words will never embrace
matter- Not on your heart; Nor mine-
They'll disappear one page at a time-
and lay as forgotten as I

It is true that at times we can feel as though we mean very little in the grand scheme of things but in reality we are each a supportive spoke in the magical wheel life. All that is will never again be the same for our presence here, and where our feet have trod, the earth herself has experienced a change that will never return exactly as she was. Every molecule in the universe is in some way affected by our very existence. As far as our words upon the page, I believe that they do impact those who read them, if only for a moment, as mine here probably are doing to you right now. The ability to write emotion, understanding or our deepest, perhaps subconscious thoughts is a blessing. Let us cast our words upon the page, as food for thought for all who chance to read them. I believe that God does not evaluate our importance here by the same standards as humans do. We each have a purpose, and our mission is as individual and as important as all the others. This marvelous poem sighs like a shallow breath, hoping for the best yet fearing the worst; human nature in its raw and most natural form. This is a poem that should be cherished by all who read it as there is a small piece of each of is within its verse. Most excellent write, Lisa!

Take care,

Sherry

Lisa, this is a universal fear. The fear of unimportance, of being forgotten. We reach; every time we write we reach for that little bit of recognition. We want to make our mark, leave our footprint on the world. Words are our tools -- so well I understand this poem. I have a short story posted here on AD: "Forget me Not" Written from a child's point of view. When her alcoholic uncle announces he will live for ever. We think of forever as on going here on this earth and we know ourselves to be. The point she makes at the end of the story is that he wants her to remember his name. Our words and thoughts are important. You've touched on so many levels I can certainly relate to, with "Dry is My Pallet" I could go on forever and a day. Excellent piece of work. ~~Carmen

you will never be forgotten, just as you have made a mark on us here at the authours den soon too will you make one on the public literary scene and so become immortal.

Lisa, Lisa, Lisa,

Is writing worth it? Definately. Will it make us rich? Probably not...but the reader who reads your words and feels them resonate within their soul is indeed blessed. I know you've blessed me...a powerfully compelling, heart-touching write. BRAVA!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Life being the conundrum that it is sometimes gives us a slanted, ugly perspection of ourselves. Actually, we are all, for the most part, pretty good folks even with our quirks and pettiness.
