Where We Were

I think about where we were; Where we've
been; Where we are no longer-
Tears still well, but the prayers for the
dead have lessened; The voices of anger
have fell silenced; Every aspect of why
has been beaten to its own
sentencing of a final era-
The searches for normalcy met; Forcing
opened hands to once again lay evenly
at our sides-

I think about where we were; I can still
hear the screams of the dying; See the bodies
as they plummeted to the ground-
Smelled the smoke as it filled the air; Felt the
quake that changed the horizons;
And I felt the guilt; Oh the guilt that took
over my entire body; heart, mind and soul-
'Til that day; I'd never heard his name;
Oh but I met him on the faces and in the eyes
of every passerby; In every photo; and in
every lifeless body pulled from beneath the
twisted steel and concrete rubble-

I think about where we were; And damn it; It
still hurts; Damn him; Him; The one that so
many had never gave one moment's thought to; Oh
but they have now; The one that forced our opened
hands to clench at our chests and feel the pain
of his vigilant hatred-
I think about where we were; Within minutes of
where we'd been; Where normal seemed so
far away; and why didn't seem to matter at all-
It happened; To us; Against us; And it
stole our lives; It threw us into mourning;
and the shock of numbness as realization

I think about where we were; Where we've been;
and where we are no longer-
Each time I hear, Amazing Grace, I feel the
coldness of its tone;
Every sidewalk takes me down the smooth runway
to a place we recognize as Ground Zero-
But it too has been reconditioned to normalcy-
Maybe we should have left the rubble-
As our gateway to remembering; Our gateway
as a reminder for us not to forget-

I think about where we were; and Where we've been;
I think about him remaining vigilant in hatred-
and damn it; Damn him; For I know; He knows;
where we are no longer

Dear Lisa,

I'm afraid that the U.S. will soon see other 911s, most likely even more devastating, because we have done virtually nothing since that time to secure the country against such attacks. The people who perpetrate such acts have no value for human life. They are ignorant cowards who blindly follow their horrid doctrines of hate toward any who do not believe the same way as they do.

Love & Light,
Joseph

Powerful, Lisa. It's weird to live here in the NYC area and hear on the news what's esseentially become squabbling over the ground zero site. Nothing makes man revert back to "normalcy" it seems than greed. Strong writing. ~~Nordette

How clearly you paint! How painfully well you rip the ill-formed scab from wounds some would forget. How masterfully you draw the emotions back to us and re-draw that which would slither away behind excuses for religious fundamentalism's gross sherade of righteousness against the innocent. Throughout history there have been no limits to the depths of depravity done to others by religious fundamentalists. You have reminded us of this fact. Terrific job, Lisa.

As I read this piece pictures of that horric day flooded my mind and the pain re-emergedfrom wher I had hidden it.

Job well done, Lisa

Americans have become soft; we have forgotten all that has gone before, and even before 9-11. We forgot about Midway, Normandy, Dunkirk and Pearl Harbor where so many were lost in the name of freedom. 9-11 we were attacked on our own soil and yet people want to forget, pretend that it was some kind of a flook that could never happen again. Wake up, America!! The threat to all we know and love is very real and it is today. You had me reeling with this write, Lisa. A superb accounting of that day and the way that we have tried so diligently to cover our scars. Let the scars bleed, that we shall never forget and that we never again become smug and believe we are above attack. Your words rang loudly in your call for unity and for all to remember that our freedom is a very fragile thing and in the blink of an eye, it can be stripped from us forever. Exceptional write and thank you for continuing to bang loudly upon the drum, that this tragedy shall never rest.

Take care,

Sherry

Thank you for remembering, and for forcing others who have forgotten to see it again in all of its brutal clarity. A stunning piece, powerfully and painfully penned. BRAVA!

Once again you take us for an emotional rollercoaster ride that takes our breath away and has us screaming at he injustice of it all! The sad part is, how many forget and don't want to remember, and even worse they only know how to play blame America for everything until I want to punch their lights out! Fantastic write Lisa!

Oh Lisa this resonates with the depth of your pain and despair and I want so much to tell you that it will be okay and it will all end some day and justice of a civilized world will reign supreme but we both know it would be a lie. The only consolation, if there is one, is that people like us the writers and the poets will hopefully never let down our vigilence so each new generation will not forget and continue the struggle with the hopes that the lunatics will be if not controlled balancecd.Great write.

Powerful reminder of what was and how fast some forget it and the insanity of it all. The devil has many followers on this earth today and it is he who puts the evil in man's head.

Well, you penned a fantastic ode to the American spirit, or lack of it, in this one, Lisa. Nothing wrong with analysing and wondering, that is what we do, but the real test is what are we doing about it. THAT is something we all should be 100% behind, but it seems that politics ever override our safety. This is good.
