Tool of Defiance

Cracked plaster walls, perfectly matching those in
his own guarded world-
His eyes couldn’t hide, the struggles that lied, beneath
the thin surface of time-
He played the role well, in an unforgettable performance;
of the warrior fighting his way through Hell

His hands stained with the rust of the tall iron gates,
and his ears still pierced from their squalls-
He didn’t go alone; He didn’t get out by himself;
They’d all seen the demons, that talked gibberish notions;
The double-headed beasts with claws long and tough-
they laughed hyena-style; and spewed death painful and vile

But then came the child; That beautiful long-haired girl;
that would look them in the face and cry out-
She named all her captors one by one;
whimpered blasphemy in tones and tears-
Her innocence reigned over the hearts of men;
as she romped through their souls like a spear

She hated much deeper than she’d ever loved;
a rock solid ship floating toward destruction-
A tool of defiance; They’d used her well-
to infiltrate; to deceive; to promise death-
She was a two-way mirror; a two-sided face;
We, her targets; as she closed the space

Her Mother cried for the shame of her child;
and the plan that was foiled and spoiled-
She’d given all she owned; this long-haired child,
to an evil masked and mean-
but it was all she knew; all she’d ever praised;
this glossy force twisted and crazed

Not even a stain where her spirit stood,
the concrete again dark and fresh-
words of her song drifted on the wind-
coming to rest somewhere far away-
Another convoy would pass this way tomorrow;
never aware of today’s scene of sorrow

For the men that looked on,
oh they’ll never forget her face-
They’ll go home, leaving this place-
This place where they learned, fought and cried-
This place called Hell where nothing hides-
where insanity and youth committed suicide

Now the cracks in the walls are his own
guarded world-
He plays the role well, in an unforgettable performance,
of a warrior that survived the battlegrounds of Hell
He’ll lay down his head, and that child he’ll find-
singing her song, with no story to tell

As I've said probably a million times before, you are an artist who paints the scenes and emotions vividly on our eyes; the reader is immersed in your powerful, thought provoking poetry. Well done!

Lisa, as usual I find in your work something I wish I had written myself. This piece is a deep and real look into the use of children for the destruction of other, In Vietnam it was common, and unfortunately, nothing has changed. Our enemies still use the methods they know will work to reach their end. What American, no matter how jaded, could ever forget the young giving up their lives for the fanaticism of adults.

Deep and intense look into the mind and terrors of the men who suffer the demons that can't be erased with a little pill. Well done.

You always amaze by how you capture with such depth of reality as if you were there. Mesmerizing account that leaves the flesh chilled and the thoughts turning to prayer. Superb Lisa!

I see that the two who commented below me think that this refers to the Middle East and perhaps it does, but I was seeing it as Viet Nam where women and children were walking bombs. We were forced to trust no one in that war and to kill anyone who seemed suspicious. Our soldiers took a hard rap for that action, but it saved many of their lives. Neither gender nor age is criteria for suicide bombers, and it seems that both women and children are assumed to be innocent. I am certain that having to kill either would not set well for the soldier who must, but the reality of the situation is clear...trust no one except those who fight beside you. We need to loosen the ties on our soldiers and let them be the warriors that they have been trained to be. This whole mess about prosecuting soldiers for "hazing" prisoners is ridiculous and has gotten out of control. We do what we have to do to get information and humiliation is a far less damaging way than physical torture or beheadings, though perhaps less effective. Our enemies are praised by their people for their acts and our soldiers are punished...go figure; there is nothing gentlemanly about war! Excellent write, Lisa. This situation rears its ugly head again in this current war. When will we learn that other countries don't regard women and children as we do in the USA? In other countries women are chattel, and for her to give her life as a suicide bomber is perhaps her only opportunity for fame and immortality.

Take care,

Sherry

a powerful and gripping poem that explores the finaticism and deception of a brainwashed youth ... i found the imagery easy to visualize and the characterzation as emotionally potent ...

The outside world, the world not of the Muslim faith, is bumbling, fumbling, two-stepping along, trying to fight insanity with reason and with old-fashioned ideas of war and warfare. We are going to lose if we keep up this facade. We cannot win the fight against insanity with our present ground rules for our warriors. When we hue and cry about our prisoners "rights" the insane ones laugh and rub their hands with glee and send another homicide bomber to vent their pleasure. We are seen as weak and foolish and naive. Until we decide to seek out and destroy those of our enemies we will never see daylight in the so-called war on terror. If others are killed in this seek and destroy mission, more than likely they are aiding and abeting and who the hell cares if they die too? We have to take our gloves off to fight insane people who fight us naked.

A ghoulish and garish tale that epitomises the deep hatred and insanity of the female suicide bombers who wreak havoc and destruction on an innocent world in the name of their so called God !
Beautifully and tastefully crafted as ever Lisa
Thanks for reminding us of the grim reality of living in the mad 21 st Century !
