Fading Days of Summer

The days are growing short and the nights long

I can smell the autumn hovering on the fringe

Waiting to claim its rightful place

As it uses summer’s stark heat

To blow the dry winds of change

Soon there will be golden leaves

And the fields will give forth their bounty

Conceived and ripened in this fading season

There will be a crisp chill upon the wind

Stinging my face and making pink my cheeks

The sun will slip off to an early sleep

Tucking in the darkness, behind the mesa

A plush carpet of burdened grasses

Will blanket and protect the seeds

Given back to the earth for safe keeping

This morning I prepared and saved the peaches and berries

Their sweetness will remind me of summer

As I smell the pies baking on a frozen winter’s day

Reminding me how quickly the seasons pass

And how soon spring will melt the snow from the earth

Soon I will gather and chop the wood

I will feel the unmistakable crunch of leaves beneath my feet

I shall pick my last bouquet of lavender, cosmos and roses

Make the season's final batch of strawberry ice cream

But for now I nap in the sunshine and kiss the fading days of summer

Sherry This is a beautiful poem with the old fashioned days all wrapped up in it. It's beautiful and tasty too. I can smell and taste all those tasty treats and the vivid colors and sounds of the leaves. The seasons you have intertwining is just absolutely gorgeous Sherry. This is the most beautiful poem of nature and seasons I have ever read. Gorgeous in every way just like you my friend. Beautiful Sherry Absolutely Beautiful!

I closed my eyes and envisioned these fading days. I'm ready for the harvest. Sherry, I like this one, it reminds me of my days living
in the country.

Sherry, although summer is fading, I’d rather keep it around forever. I do enjoy the changing of the seasons, but this weary body doesn’t like the cold. It’s already starting to drop into the 50’s at night and the daytime temperatures hover in the 70’s, which I can deal with. Outstanding visuals and great work. Thanks for sharing it. Take good care and be well.

what a great poem. i love visual poems, where i can 'see' the world of the poet's creation, and this poem really awakens my love of nature, and the seasons. i appreciate how you capture them so clearly, especially the emotions that arise when the seasons change. fall is my favorite, so that was the part i liked the best. thanks for the visual and emotional journey, sherry! i can't wait to smell the burning leaves on the air...

Very very nice, Sherry. All of summer here, even as anticipating the cool of autumn.

This is wonderful, sherry. It is like saying farewell to lovely friend while receivn another in his place. It is only the season which is leaving not the pleasant memories it had left behind. Excellent poem

Isn't it wonderful that we can lie back and write our thoughts, not rushing to gather provisions in the fading days of summer? This one is magic, like the September song. The music and your words had me smelling that fragrance that autumn brings.

This is when I find you at your most compelling and with your poetic beauty sailing like a fully-rigged, tall-masted ship at full tilt, Sherry! :)) You are absolutely first class at these evocative mood pieces that sow the essence of feel-good, mingled with a warm nostalgia and heart-lust for "the good things in life" - amid colourful collages of nature scenes, too. You must truly be such a well-integrated person. And you sow a desire in me for your patience and cullinary skills, to give me that "Earth Mother" feel... always hoped I would be like that when I had kids, but, although maternal feelings are strong, I haven't quite the "domestic goddess" ones to go with it! :)) And a JOY to hear your spoken voice bring your poetry to life on your recital. It's true what you say about now being able to hear each other's voices in all things, once we have been exposed to them. Very well done! TY Kate xx

Yup. Smelling those pies as I type. Nothing like that smell . . . Well, maybe except for the perfume a woman gives off when she first walks into a room. Too bad they can't combine apple pie and Channel; THAT would turn some heads. Beautiful poem.

Sherry,
This is timeless. One could drift through the delightfulness of this time after time and come out of it, with completion each and every read.
You made the chopping of the wood sound like something everyone will want to run out and get done, and oh, Oh the strawberry icecream and the picking of lavender and roses..I may just have to take a walk through the woods today, and just take in the season.
You don't write often, but when you do, it's a wonderful treat for all.
Take care Sherry!
