A Passive Slavery
There’s a Jaguar in your driveway
And a Lexus by your door
You’d hire an American
But then you'd have to pay her more
Your maid is named Maria
Though no English does she speak
She does a really super job
And you get her on the cheap
She came here quite illegally
Which you know as well as she
It’s a secret that you both do share
And don’t mention publicly
You promote the disease that breaks our backs
Through free services she must use
You pay her so damn little
She can’t buy her children shoes
So she stops by WIC and welfare
And gets the articles she needs
Medical, housing, food and clothes
As you hide your dirty deeds
Today she didn’t come to work
She stayed out to support her cause
Though her kids still went to public school
And she eats free while breaking laws
If a change can ever happen
And our borders be secure
It is going to be the job of each of us
To become part of the cure

I suggest we start the 'cleanup' by tossing that beady eyed, Big Oil toady SOB that currently inhabits the White House to the curb...Never in my life did I dream we'd be spending triple what we were paying 5 years ago for a gallon of gas, although I knew before Dubya left office that he'd have this country thrown into pandemonium. Yesterday's marches were a good example of that. I don't know how he and his cronies sleep at night, unless they are exactly what I said...amoral.
Ok, I'm climbing down off of my Democratic soap box now. Great write Sherry! It certainly inspired alot of opinions!!! Including my little rant! I always love reading your work...

I concur with Vicky below completely
This is one big issue that should have been confronted honestly long time ago, just like George Bush Senior should have finished off that sicko Saddam in 1991...
The sins of the father are visited upon the son !

"A Passive Slavery" said it plainfully, and its closing lines call for JUSTICE.
"If a change can ever happen
And our borders be secure
It is going to be the job of each of us
To become part of the cure"
Thank You, Poet for this "A Passive Slavery".
Healthy Blissful Life.

Pretty darn sad, if you ask me. I can understand wanting to better one's life, but to take benefits from American citizens...beyond me. A majority of them do not want to learn English; they have their kids translate. If their want to have the American dream, why are they sending their (OUR) money overseas? To support their families?? Don't understand. You've said it powerfully and eloquently--thank you. The ones hiring illegals are just as bad.
(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Multiple perspectives of the issue painted here with elloquence.
Feels to me like one of our Shadows we are going to wish we'd begun
facing with honest courage long before it go so large and looming.
Blessings, Vicky
excellent rhyme to this powerful and well written poem ...
God Bless
