I saw this photo, thought it was both funny and appropriate. So this poem was born.

Poem Artwork

Guitar

I used to be your instrument

Your loud and screeming guitar

Your wild riffs poured out of me

I defined just who you are

I used to be a cozy cave

That brought you shelter from the storm

I was that single bright street light

That kept you safe from harm

I used to live my life for you

Though never asked you to live for me

I never made you speak the truth

All I wanted was for you to live free

But now as I gaze upon my life

And wonder who I might have been

I see this empty shell of me

I gave it all so you could win

Here I am with only words to speak

Or to leave upon the page

Without you in my life these days

I am left with only wisdom and age

It is funny how I felt alive

As I watched you grow so strong

And all the while I was giving more

'till I was left with but a lonely song

I was a fool not to ask for credibility

Or equality and truth

Unwise to let the love I felt

Waste away my youth

Now I sit alone in the sun

Watching the clouds drift by

I see the Summers come and go

And all I can do is sigh

The illustration is a great catalyst, Sherry, but your words do it more than justice and carry such an aching piquancy that is shared testimony of many, I'm sure. Shot through with authenticity, this is truly a felt write and one that has commanded your pen and inspiration well. A really good write and excellent metaphor. xx

You saw all of that in a photo? All I can see are cheeks closed for a reason. Is that the same thing? :)

Such a mournful tune while your guitar gently weeps. The image says, “play me.”

So good to see you posting again after so long.

A most moving and meaningful sharing; your verses express a sad, universal, and timeless theme of this life/world. Thank you, Sherry. Love and best wishes to you,
