Freak 'monster waves' freely roam our seas; hard to detect, such waves (some more than 115 feet high) regularly sink large ships... Having experienced the notoriously stormy seas off South America's Cape Horn, I am glad the ship was not slammed by one of these babies.

I was a Chif Engineer of a 365.000 tonne oil tanker ship on its way from Persian Gulf to Japan when a tsunami wave well over 90 feet high got right and square on our bow (had it been sideway I will be not writing this words) shaking the monster ship like a little puppy dog will be shake by a grown up dog. The wave smashed windows with tempered glass 2" thick.
I was in the bridge at the time and saw the wave suddenly coming like a runaway train...and was gone.

The sea is an unpredictable beast. No matter the size of vessel, we sail in the midst of her swelling terrain at our own risk. I have a friend who worked the North Sea first as a fisherman then in the offshore rescue boats. He told me that a man could only survive for 3 minutes once he'd fallen from a rig into the sea. In other words, my friend's rescue boat also had 3 minutes to reach him.
No surprise then that a movie bears the title of The Cruel Sea.
On the other hand, from the quiet silken shores of my favourite Scottish island retreat one can only stare in awe as the sea dons her most fabulous sunset garments. Water world repose indeed.
