Eating the Diamond" was the original title of this one, which I am reposting, since I referred to it in response to a review of N of Poland, and so there is no confusion about where I stand when it comes to crimes against humanity. Again, this is a re-post of an earlier poem about the Holocaust, based on a story I heard. I changed the title so as not go give away the idea in the title, but have put the original title here so no one is confused in re of my referral.

                      Hope Against

      (originally entitled "Eating the Diamond"

Picture a young woman or what's left: bones --

freezing, terrified, somehow conjuring a future.

She swallows a small stone, and perhaps

a week later, enough gathered in the intestine,

the horrid foreign-body cramps commence.

Furtively, she shifts through her own shit.

Again she swallows the gem,

along with the scant scraps keeping her

live enough to labor while dying.

And, again.

It's all she has for a dreamed-of child

with a man she may never meet.

Eat, shit, and so forth, through carnage

and cursing seasons.

Finally, the camps are liberated,

and she stands on a sun-soaked shore

facing west, scrawny palm cradling

the little diamond, which has sidled with

blood, mucus, anus.

She unfurls her fingers for just a few moments --

And -- light! wheels and wings off the tiny facets,

bold and brilliant enough

to illumine eternities of galaxies of nights.

Provocative, yes. Blunt. Honest. Painful to think and re-think of what so-called civilized people do to each other in the name of hate, bigotry, fear. Yet a few somehow survive when, finally, the camps are liberated. A good friend of mine, now living in Connecticut, was able to escape Berlin at age 5 or 6, thanks to his grandfather. His father, mother, and sister died in one of the camps. He's the Hank (a phony name)in my posted poem, The Night Hank Got Laid. I like your original title. -gene.

Stark and "in your face" verses that the reader cannot ignore and is drawn to read again. It is truly a privilege to read you, Julianza. Merci infiniment. Amour et meilleurs souhaits,

Régis
