Parenthood redux. Perhaps also check out Ray Bradbury's short story "The Small Assassin."
OOZE The knife plunges the heart
something they don't tell
you at the start
when first you gaze
at the pink new wonder
who coos, gurgles, and
eyes you back, dazed,
as ever will be the case.
The knife twists
on its one-inch axis.
Love pulses, greening
the ruby riverbeds.

Both with picture and poem, you have captured an essence of that greatest of all unknowns; the fetus, who will someday become a messiah or a serial killer or, God help us, another inept president. My sister has two sons. One is so bright. The other is so dark. She likes to credit herself for the one and blame herself for the other. She is, of course, wrong on both counts. Stephen King always knew there was something monstrous about a fetus, so cute and loveable, even as it cannibalizes its mother ...
If you tend to believe romantic, passionate, masculine poetry is a thing of past eras, read "She Intrigues Me," and be swept away in the beautiful craft of a contemporary poet of love.
