Acrylic "My Sister Dreamed" by Julianza Shavin

For "Bob Dana."

Poem Artwork

                       Fast, Slow

My sister, at eighty three pounds and

five foot nine was shunted from college

college a skeleton.

How much her state had to do with

my mother's ceaseless dieting,

being on the father's fringes, or

anything else she's hinted at

I don't know.

We attended family therapy with a

comedic couple who could not

speak our language; still, she got well

and became a shrink like her saviors.

She gobbles chocolate every night now

but stays slim.

We don't discuss those days

when her upper thigh rivaled my arm.

She is an artist now, shares acreage

with a country boy,

stares out wide windows

at thick slow cows who

never stop eating,

ever.

a story with a happy ending -- can it get any better than that? -- youth can be a time of great turmoil and unhappiness -- youth is not a guarantee of joy -- eating chocolate and watching moo's graze can't be bad -- peace to you -- JMW

All's well, etc. ... I guess cows do all that eating because
they got nothing better to do. Happens to humans too. -gene.

Sadness permeates these lines - can't imagine. Well written, Julianza. The ending particularly powerful: cows don't have to worry about how they look, why should we? Because society demands we look "perfect." And who among us can measure up? Not a one.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Another cool poem. Never could quite figure out the thing with cows. Do they really have five stomachs? They bite their food, chew it up for the longest time, swallow it, cough it back up again, and chew it some more, swallow it again, and this goes on and on for about forever. No wonder there are so many mad cows :-)
