I have been reading a bit of one of my favorite poets of all time, Conrad Aiken, and because I admire his beautiful work, challenged myself to be brave enough to try repetition. This poem was well-received orally, but I don't know how it does on the page. Title is subject to change. Having a time with this title.

           DROPPING LIKE RUBIES

What I'd like to say is, the crabapples

are dropping everywhere

and you never made that pie

but what I'm thinking is that

you are dropping everywhere

but the crabapples are fine wherever.

The sound of dropping is like rain

except there hasn't been any rain --

there is just an endless waiting,

a weary waiting, a restless hope

of resolution, and I feel the dropping

like a morphine drip, without the heaven.

Everything is fainting from my fingers.

Physics is winning or I am clumsy and both,

and you keep on dropping while

everywhere the fledglings test their wings

and I keep dropping things.

Today, the door was left ajar and the cat

made many murders but sometimes,

even worse, only halfway so.

Some dropped with punctures

gleaming like rubies in the sun,

but one had a harrowing gash and

we could see the tiny sinews in its head.

Another lost all tail feathers, so

we took them, one by one,

to wildlife rescue where kind

white coats determine

the fate of maimed birds.

In the middle of all this dropping

it was good, in a way, to go forward

and back and not just up or down, and

leaving the birds, we stopped for coffee,

which dropped from the corners of your mouth

onto the new old shirt, and once home,

I dropped the keys and left them there.

You were still dropping dropping and,

not schooled in human rescue,

I couldn't scoop you up, and then

it was midnight, I closed my eyes,

and heard you, the birds, and the apples,

all dropping to various sleeps as the earth

turned its other cheek, and then

all was silent until the curtain fully

dropped on night,

and dawn gifted us twelve

more hours of gravity's

dropping us up to a brand new day.

Julie, I just read Conrad Aiken's "Red is the Color of Blood,"
and my conclusion is that Aiken would applaud you and this poem,
as do I. It's not enough that you're so prolific, but the quality
of what you post is consistently professional. I like. -gene.

I think you did a marvelous job on this and the title is almost perfect the ruby hits the mind automatically with that clearest of fire reds and sets the stage for all the other reds in the verses.

Enjoyed this poem, yes the repetition seemed to have worked
out marvelously.

Take care,
Gwendolyn

It works spectacularly, Julianza. Indeed! Love the line,

"...and I feel the dropping
like a morphine drip, without the heaven. ..." WOW.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
