Urban Fairy Tale
(Upon journeying into the rainbow world,
seeking Oz, wearing red shoes ...)
You are not from here, he said:
Half question, half statement,
Tinged with doubt, colored with hope.
Yes, I said, but only from, not of.
These narrow eastern country roads
And more narrow country souls
Have never been the kind of place
That I would claim as home.
Thank whatever gods there are
For that.
I much prefer a pounding bass
To a bible thumping in my face.
Halleluiah,
Thank you, Jaysus!
Do I hear amen?
Ain’t it funky.
Had I not gone away, I would have been
Doomed to being of, not from.
No music in that world, no glitter,
No rapier of wit to pierce the heart of sameness.
Worse luck:
I would have missed the richness
Of so much laughter
And so much love.
(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
