How occasionally we catch a glimpse of the similarity between man and animal.

Diving From the Tobermory Rocks

When I see my cat propel her body skyward

on to my neighbour’s fence

and with one more leap

reach the top of his bungalow roof

to escape the angry jaws of a perplexed canine,

I know that there is a secret pact

between earth, air and cat

that offers invisible pathways of escape;

when I see my cat languishing twelve inches from a neighbour’s dog,

held there by a long chain,

stretching and yelping,

straining to maul it

and the cat, uninterested and disdainful,

cleaning her deceptive face with her sacred paws,

I know that she thinks she will live forever;

but when I see you hurling yourself from the high Tobermory rocks,

spinning your body in mid air,

plunging into the frigid waters sixty feet below,

I remind myself that you are not cat

but for an instant must have lived within its protected, invisible barriers.

Wow-that is some ending. You have an interesting style, having lulled us with the idea of cats and dogs and the playfulness in their natural instincts, yet the real aggression there as well, then when the person jumps, wow, it takes the breath away as if we are jumping ourselves. Excellent.

Ken,

Bravo - this is poetry. Wow. I loved it - regardless how somber. I look forward to read your work again.

Thank you, ~Donna.

Ken,

I loved this so much! I have two cats (one very old, one a kitten), it's like the past and future, the older one used to do that, the kitten soon will.

Another cat lover,
Mary

Still Living on my Feet by Tichaona Chinyelu

Still Living on my Feet is the follow up to Tichaona Chinyelu’s first book, In the Whirlwind, which was rooted in a sense of hard-hitting revolutionary black love. However, in this sophomore effort, Tichaona brings the revolutionary essence from deep
