And God created woman...

Poem Artwork

To Rita

One hundred years ago
The world tilted its approval
And you came upon the scene as
Margarita Carmen Cansino;
Much like the refreshing drink
You were just the right mix of ingredients
A little salty a little sassy
A vibrant classy lassie
Named quite well
For you.

Yet a look of melancholy
A hint of sadness
Adorned your majestic
Face;
Mr. Astaire was such a lucky man
To have met you—
You danced with fire
You kindled desires
Even a little boy’s
Especially mine.

A thousand times and more
I watched you grace the floor
And wondered if you
Were real or just
An illusion of
Perfection.

You aged with grace
Maintained that breathless face
Until the end
When that killer of dreams
Alzheimer’s
Snatched you—
And my screams
Can be heard even
To this day.

Such beauty and grace... in this tribute, we hear the voice of a young boy dreaming with admiration. Yet the woman herself must have been misunderstood enough to get Alzheimer's so early in life and after so many marriages. Images are deceiving.

What a beautiful woman she was. Long ago I painted a portrait of her reclining on a purple, velvet chaise. Wonderful tribute.

She deserves the great honor you bestowed upon her. It is interesting how our great president would view her today. And, how Hollywood covered up the personas of so many actors and actresses from south of the border or, created caricatures of them. A part of the "good old days," that so many forget.

Knowing you, I can't believe you didn't post that most famous pinup picture of her that made me long for more.

This is a powerful poem. She accomplished so much and in the end brought down by the awful disease.

She wasn't just a woman, she was all woman. The stuff dreams are made of. Enjoyed.

I like those men and women in the 30's, they were so well-dressed and classy. Beautiful words for a classy and talented lady!

THIS is such a wonderful salute to a beautiful, oh so talented woman who gave so much, and was herself given a horrible death. Life then, just isn't fair so many, many times.
