[In celebration of Mother's Day, May 9th, 2021]

Poem Artwork

This is a re-post for the first lady in my life.
It’s also my 1,000th posting on Authors Den.
It’s a milestone that I never aimed for but one
that I am proud of. Mother’s Day seems like
the perfect time to celebrate both events.

A Mother's Day Tribute

If you were alive and I had all my senses
I'd write you a poem and mend broken fences
I'd sing you a song and warble real good
I'd do all of the things I know that I should.

But you left me so soon and I never had time
To bring you flowers or write you a rhyme
My memories though few I hold close to my chest
Yet in my solitude I know I am bles't.

I can feel your presence catch a glimpse of your smile
I'm sure you were there on the Emerald Isle
And when I hear laughter that comes from the heart
Your voice stands out and we're not far apart.

But my soul still grows weary as my days dwindle down
When I think of the good times that we never found
Quiet moments alone--a touch a sigh or a scowl
I'd pay a king's ransom for just one of them now.

Etched deep in my heart it was all meant to be
A time gap imposed between you and me
Somehow I survived and today I am stronger
A new day awaits it can't be much longer.

When I cross over that line with no beginning or end
The angels must wait I've a deed to attend
I won't need a map or Gabriel's charms
To find that Heavenly pathway straight to your arms
.

So many echoes you arrest in this precious acknowledgment of the most important female in anyone's life. Being adopted, I found no less of what you speak of here in my own adopted mother. There is something about the maternal instinct that can't be destroyed... in in passing. Beautiful remembrance. Thank you for re-posting.

Dear Ed,
I am crying as I read your poem, knowing what you have shared with us about your early life - and your early loss of that Angel who gave you to us - to the world and touch so many hearts.

As a blessed mom with a medical miracle birth and the gift of a son my moon, my star, my beloved Scott now nearing 40, I can't imagine what your own Mom - and you, went through. You, too, were (and are) that Son, Moon, Star to your own Mom - I promise you.

What a reunion that will be; just don't rush it...it will be sweeter in time and you can keep on writing more Gems for us.

God bless you, Ed, and keep you. Your Mom loves you, your poem, and we all love you too. I know I do!

Mary

For someone who didn't get to have a childhood with your mother like I did in all those wonderful memories of how smart and resourceful she was, you have written a classic poem that any mother would love to have from her son.

Vicariously, through this poem, you have satisfied a small bit of that yearning that you always had for a mother of your dreams.

Masterfully eloquent, Edward! You manage to capture that utterly unique importance of a mother's love and regard perfectly in this paean to one's maternal wellsprings. I have, all my life, been terribly smitten with awareness of the importance of mothers in not just our own human lives, but in the lives of all animals everywhere on this lovely but so sadly mistreated outpost of biologic life that we call Earth.

The tenderness of a mother wolf gently licking the fur of her cubs in the falling snow...the sight of a young Asian mother solicitously and wity her FULL attention swinging her small progeny in the local park (and NOT doing so halfway, in a rote manner with only one hand, while checking a smartphone with the other hand like so many distracted young mothers seem to do now)...the recollection of my own mother's unceasing efforts to bring up a successfully socialised, communally conscious and humanely aware small person into the flower of mature adulthood! Where would the world be, if not for these unceasing ministrations of love and unqualified acceptance (despite our small flaws and imperfections) by our mothers in our most vulnerable years?

My own mother passed on far too soon in my life, so I share this acute sense of what she meant to me and the absolutely vital, nay CRITICAL role that mothers play in helping us all navigate and safely transit the perilous waters that lie between puerile immaturity and fully actualised adulthood. And how sad I am for all those who, for whatever various reasons of importunity and fickle fate, have never experienced that fiercely burning flame of a loving mother in their lives (the same holds true for loving fathers, also, of course, but that's the subject of a different poem, isn't it?).

Thanks for sharing these thoughts with us, Edward. As always, the grammatical mechanics are fully the match of the sentience contained herein!

(And yes, they are properly 'mothers', not 'Moms' as that highly irritating cliched 'pop' term, so favored by news media people, phrases it! GAAK!) :((

You mom was graceful and beautiful and I can see her great spirit is
still living inside of you dear Edward. Your a sensitive kind man whom she would be proud to know is her son. Thank you for always lighting up the page with your skillful pen and your precious heart . This year because of covid I cannot see my kids, but we are having a coffee date
on line , with camera on, lol, they hate cameras, but for mom ?
Yes I'm one of those Italian mamma that kills them with love and
food. :) Be well dear friend, and know from heaven you are loved to
